General Motors Corps' Buick nameplate tied with Lexus of Toyota Motor Corp. for first place in the J.D. Power and Associates vehicle dependability study of owners of three-year-old vehicles. The results mark the first time in 12 years that another brand has tied with Lexus for the top spot, J.D. Power said Thursday.
Buick and Lexus were tied with a score of 145 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with an industry average of 216. Rounding out the top five are Cadillac, Mercury and Honda. Lexus received five segment awards, the most of any nameplate in 2007, for the GS300, GS430, GX470 and LS430 and LX470 SUVs.
The 2007 vehicle dependability study is based on responses from more than 53,000 original owners of 2004 model year vehicles. Responses were gathered earlier this year.
In a statement, Buick general manager Jim Bunnell said, "quality is a key hallmark of the Buick brand. Buicks have long been regarded for craftsmanlike quality, attention to detail and library-quiet interiors."
Buick vehicles had consistently scored well on quality surveys in recent years.
